Ipu Hōkiokio Workshop (nose flute)

PILI Foundation is proud to provide authentic cultural workshops to our local community enhancing cultural awareness, deepening knowledge and passing on cherished traditions.

We are honored to have artisan Gabe Mika’ele Paredes available to teach this workshop. Gabe is a cultural-practioner, gourd artist and grandson of Uncle Mike Wong, master gourd artisan.

In this small, hassle-free, educational workshop, each student will be able to learn how to create an ipu hōkiokio (nose flute) using traditional methods. All necessary supplies and tools to use during the workshop will be provided.

IPU HŌKIOKIO (nose flute)

The ipu hōkiokio is a gourd flute. The interior of each gourd is hollowed out and the exterior is highly-polished showing the natural color of the exterior. Four small holes are drilled for proper finger placement and one for the nose. Traditionally, these melodic instruments were played in small, intimate settings leaving pleasant and oftentimes romantic sounds.

  • Each instrument is comprised of a gourd grown here in San Diego County.

  • Hand-crafted instrument for each student to take home

  • Lesson on how to play your ipu hōkiokio

  • We honor traditional, cultural practices in this workshop
