Ipu Hōkiokio Workshop (nose flute)

PILI Foundation is proud to provide authentic cultural workshops to our local community enhancing cultural awareness, deepening knowledge and passing on cherished traditions.

We are honored to have artisan Gabe Mika’ele Paredes available to teach this workshop. Gabe is a cultural-practioner, gourd artist and grandson of Uncle Mike Wong, master gourd artisan.

In this small, hassle-free, educational workshop, each student will be able to learn how to create an ipu hōkiokio (nose flute) using traditional methods. All necessary supplies and tools to use during the workshop will be provided.

IPU HŌKIOKIO (nose flute)

The ipu hōkiokio is a gourd flute. The interior of each gourd is hollowed out and the exterior is highly-polished showing the natural color of the exterior. Four small holes are drilled for proper finger placement and one for the nose. Traditionally, these melodic instruments were played in small, intimate settings leaving pleasant and oftentimes romantic sounds.

  • Each instrument is comprised of a gourd grown here in San Diego County.

  • Hand-crafted instrument for each student to take home

  • Lesson on how to play your ipu hōkiokio

  • We honor traditional, cultural practices in this workshop

Sign up below for this culturally-rich workshop with Gabe Mika’eleParedes. Space is limited.

PILI Foundation is proud to announce the return of master artisan, Kai Hyde for a Niʻihau Shell Workshop.

Kai joins us from Hawaiʻi and has been creating beautiful Niʻihau shell jewelry for over 24 years. You can frequently find him spending over 12 hours per day preparing shells or making jewerly for clients worldwide.

Niʻihau shells are quite difficult to come by and have to be properly harvested, matched, sized, prepared and strung before using as a jewelry item. There are various shells and colors that vary in their value, color, luster and intensity. The value of Niʻihau shells has increased dramatically. As such, there are several shells that may be used for substitutes but lack the same quality and value.

This is an instructor-led workshop and no previous experience is required. All guests will leave with a project in progress (large projects) or completed (smaller projects) at the end of the workshop.

Supplies:

Students must purchase one of the kits provided by Kai in order to have the proper supplies and preparations for class. Kai will match, prepare, and supply necessary cording, latches, hooks and glue for all jewelry. Students may purchase as many kits as desired especially if you are looking to create a matching set.

If you do not see something noted or have special questions/requests, please let us know so we can facilitate and consolidate the communication with Kai. Please note for special requests and shells available, we may require additional time for Kai to confirm availability. Please note that last minute requests may not be fulfilled due to travel and preparation required. Thank you for your patience in advance.

During this workshop, you will:

  • learn about Niʻihau shells directly from Kai Hyde;

  • learn proper traditional techniques for a variety of projects;

  • learn to create a special jewelry piece (of your selection);

  • have the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and make new friends

Refund Policy:

  • Due to the custom nature of our projects, we do not offer refunds.

  • We understand emergencies happen. If you cannot attend on the day of the class date, please call 858-243-5071 or email us at info@PILIfoundation.org ASAP and we will be happy to transfer your registration for a future class.

    • We will waive a transfer date for any notice received MORE THAN 72 hours from the class date.

    • Notices received LESS THAN 72 hours from class date will be charged a $25 transfer fee, unless COVID related.

    • Guests who do not email nor contact us prior to class starting are considered no show students and forfeit their registration fee.

NOTE: A portion of proceeds will be donated to dancers competing at George Naʻope Hula Festival.
